**Please note that there are some disturbing details in this entry that sensitive readers might want to avoid.**

On a recent ride along, I was reminded of the side of policing that often isn't spoken of: the emotional burden that police officers carry on our behalf. The shift itself consisted of three calls related to children and two related to elderly/disabled, but it was one of those children's calls that was particularly devastating. It involved six siblings, all under the ages of 13. I c...

We are excited to announce that Columbus Division of Police Ofc Pete Casuccio has joined the Starfish Assignment board as an Executive Vice President. Ofc Casuccio has been a police officer for six years, patrolling the area of South Linden (5 Precinct). He is devoted to the community he serves and lives by the motto "see a need, fill a need." This mindset led him to start his own charity, Cops and Barbers, with his barber, Robert Cayson, in 2018.

Almost immediately after that first Cops and...

Our primary mission is to work with law enforcement officers to help members of the communities they serve. Our secondary mission is to enhance the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. One way we do that is to try to educate the public about law enforcement, and Columbus Division of Police has been very open with allowing us to do ride alongs and then provide blog updates about those ride alongs. Recently our President, Nicole Banks, was invited to do a ride a...

Today we had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony of the 131st Recruit Class of the Columbus Division of Police Training Academy. That alone would be wonderful, but what made it truly special was that we were invited by Starfish Assignment volunteers, Shannon McCroskey Rothwell and Ansley Rothwell, to witness Ansley's graduation from that very recruit class!

The new Ofc Rothwell is dedicated to her chosen career and is excited to be embarking on this new chapter. W...

Columbus Division of Police Community Liaison Ofc Robin Medley (11 Pct) asked Starfish Assignment for help with an elderly veteran who is living in a house in deplorable conditions that will most likely be condemned by Code Enforcement. The vet was very reluctant to listen to anyone about moving into a safe, clean home. In addition, his medical coverage has lapsed and he wouldn't consider turning to the VA for care.

We asked our volunteer, Jim Stewart, to help on this Assignment. Jim was actu...

At this month's Starfish Assignment meeting, Columbus Division of Police Community Liaison Officer James Poole (20 Precinct) spoke to us about the everyday heroism of some of his fellow officers. The stories ranged from pranksters that officers might encounter on the job to a discussion of Ofc Jason Jackson, who worked to bring the Explorers program to CPD. Unfortunately, Ofc Jackson passed away from cancer earlier this year at the age of 47. The Explorers program that he worked so hard...

We promised you our April speaker would be dynamic, and Columbus Division of Police Ofc Tony Rogers did not disappoint! Ofc Rogers, who is currently a Community Liaison Officer for 7 Precinct (East Side) spoke to us about his 12 years as a K9 handler and talked in depth about his three K9 partners. He painted vivid pictures of their personalities, their working styles, their career highs, and their quirks. We learned how CPD uses K9s to keep the public and officers safe, how the dogs interac...

Our guests at this month's Starfish Assignment Columbus meeting were Sergeant Jason Ratcliff and Deputy Darrah Metz from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office Therapy Dog program, and their respective K9 partners, Kit and Mattis.

The program was established in 2017, just a short time after Dep. Metz approached recently-elected Sheriff Baldwin with her idea for the program. He enthusiastically embraced it, which was one of only a handful in the country at that time. Since then, Frankl...
