Behind the Badge – Officer Q&A
Q: Please tell us a little about yourself.
A: I'm from Marion County and lived here my whole life, other than college. I'm in my 24th year at the Marion Police Department, under 2 years to go.
Q: What inspired you to become a police officer?
A: I don't remember wanting to be anything else. My grandfather was a Railroad Police Officer and my Uncle retired as the Chief of the Marion Police Department.
Q: What's your favorite memory on the job?
A: Being K9 Handler. I've had the privilege to work with two amazing K9s. K9 Six (retired) did everything I ever asked him to do and was an amazing partner. He did several things that surprised me but made me very proud. K9 Ranger is still a work in progress but he also surprises me and does a great job.
Q: What's one part of your job that might surprise people?
A: The amount of time that is spent with my partner. He's part of the family and my wife and kids take care of him when I'm not home. 90% of the time he is with me. We train all the time and work when we're not training.
Q: Do you have a favorite Starfish Assignment memory or event?
A: My favorite assignment is the Special Olympics and getting to hang out with Nicole [Starfish's President and Founder].
Q: When you're off duty, what do you enjoy doing?
A: Being with my family. I love watching Buckeye football.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you received when you were young?
A: Just a saying I've heard several times. "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life." I love being a police officer.
Q: Do you like donuts? (We had to ask.)
A: Doesn't everyone!
Thank you to Lt. Elliott for spending some time with us and for everything he does to keep people safe and to connect with the community.
Check back tomorrow for K9 Ranger's Behind the Badges Q&A session! And yes, Ranger has plenty to say!
