What an unforgettable Books & Badges event at the Columbus Police Heliport! Last week, nearly 60 children from Far East Community Center joined us for a visit filled with learning and excitement. They were treated to a reading of Amazing Tigers by Pilots Deputy Chief Rob Sagle and Officer Greg Kellough, who also answered all questions about policing (and tigers!). Afterward, the officers autographed the children's books for them. The autographs were such a hit that some kids even asked for their badge stickers to be signed.
In addition to the Books & Badges reading, the group watched a helicopter take off, conducted an up-close inspection of another, and met Therapy Dog team Mike and Bodhi. Starfish Board Members Deputy Chief Tim Myers and Lieutenant Chris Lieb were also on hand to help welcome our guests.
A big thank you to Center Manager Roger Harper and his outstanding team from Far East. The children were curious, kind, and wonderfully well-behaved, which made this record-breaking visit of 60 kids run smoothly. The Columbus Recreation and Parks staff were phenomenal partners as always.
We’re especially grateful to Officer Kellough for having the idea for this special opportunity. He brought energy and enthusiasm, ensuring the kids had fun while learning, and he definitely succeeded: one child shared that he wants to become a police officer when he grows up. Sweet comments like that inspire all of us!
