Remarkable Woman Award

Our founder and president, Nicole Banks, was highlighted by NBC4 as one of four Remarkable Women who make a difference in the lives of people in Central Ohio. One of these four remarkable women will be selected to attend The Mel Robbins Show in New York City, along with nominees from across the country, where one finalist will be chosen as the Nexstar Media Group’s Woman of the Year.

Nicole was nominated by Columbus Police Sergeant Dana Hess, who has worked with Starfish multiple times in the past, including on Cops & Barbers and on an Assignment to help a victim of human trafficking. During Sgt Hess’ 12 year career, she has been a Police Academy instructor, member of the Columbus Police Honor Guard, and served on multiple boards and committees on the department.

A former United States Marine Corps military police officer, Nicole’s vision in starting the non-profit Starfish Assignment began with one small act of kindness in helping a homeless veteran get back on his feet. Since July 2018, Nicole’s passion for helping people has touched many lives. From making Christmas possible for a family whose presents were stolen, to providing haircuts for young boys, to providing book bags, coats, and books to young children in the community, Nicole’s collaboration with the Columbus Division of Police and engagement with local volunteers have made a significant and positive impression. Nicole’s selfless service inspires all of us to do good every day, regardless of how small the act.
